Fed Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Calendar Year During Financial Instability

The US monetary authority lowered borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second reduction in the current year during economic turbulence stemming from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Move Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Central Bank

The move to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an unprecedented moment for the central bank. The institution has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs even with persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Changes

In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement reads. “Price increases has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of key financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.

Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve typically studies labor statistics to determine employment trends, such as the number of employment gains created to the market and the present unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in August.

The figure of positions created to the market in August was lower by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.

Private Data Show Ongoing Slowdown

Though the bureau was set to publish last month’s employment data in early October, it halted its release once the closure started. Employment data company ADP reported earlier this month that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” central bank head Jerome Powell said recently, a trend he had previously attributed comes from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Reveals Moderate Rise

Though the bureau’s employment data has been suspended, the bureau still released its price statistics for last month that indicated that costs are rising, albeit slowly. Prices rose three percent over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
