European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says
The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US on five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted figures that were at the heart of campaigns to enact laws governing American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the move.
The bans were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders argue the rules are essential to combat hate speech and falsehoods.
This row threatens to become part of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.
